From the moment she took her sisters place as tribute to The Hunger Games, Katniss' life was under the control of those in power. Namely President Snow and Seneca Crane, at some point had a form of power and influence within the games. President Snow goes onto state that the games are in fact about controlling the masses by giving them hope. The film has a recurring themes about defiance under the influence of men in power. Empowering women is a key theme throughout the film. Even in the end when she makes the decision to eat the berries with Peeta once it was announced that there would be only one soul survivor of The Hunger Games. She takes control from those in power and in turn takes control of her destiny.
One observation regarding some of the techniques behind some of the camera shots was the first-person view. During a shot before she walks into the elevator to the games you can see her looking at herself in her reflection on the door. The eccentric acting of Elizabeth Banks along with the matching wardrobe really brought that particular character to life and she seemed to steal the show in whatever scene she was in. The film was well paced and had many memorable events like Katniss' appearance in her fire dresses and just watching her survive. It was a great story and the script was great. Another final note about the directing is that the editing for some key scenes like the drawing of the candidates when Katniss pushes the guard asking to volunteer was definitely done in various takes. which states that the director may have had creative influence over the actors drama. Putting the best shots together to create one of the best dramatic scenes of self-sacrifice and the power of love.
