The Hunger Games

The Hunger Games saga has begun and what better way to review the film then with people who have an interest in films and are currently studying the art found within movies. The implicit meaning of The Hunger Games relies heavy on the survival aspect of the film.  Katniss has no control over her destiny yet she finds various ways to to manipulate others in the form of her own decisions.  In a way, Katniss refuses to have no control over her life.  She and Peeta both take bold steps to survive in a position that seemed to be controlled and manipulated.

From the moment she took her sisters place as tribute to The Hunger Games, Katniss' life was under the control of those in power.   Namely President Snow and Seneca Crane, at some point had a form of power and influence within the games.  President Snow goes onto state that the games are in fact about controlling the masses by giving them hope. The film has a recurring themes about defiance under the influence of men in power.  Empowering women is a key theme throughout the film.  Even in the end when she makes the decision to eat the berries with Peeta once it was announced that there would be only one soul survivor of The Hunger Games.  She takes control from those in power and in turn takes control of her destiny.

One observation regarding some of the techniques behind some of the camera shots was the first-person view.  During a shot before she walks into the elevator to the games you can see her looking at herself in her reflection on the door.  The eccentric acting of Elizabeth Banks along with the matching wardrobe really brought that particular character to life and she seemed to steal the show in whatever scene she was in.  The film was well paced and had many memorable events like Katniss' appearance in her fire dresses and just watching her survive.  It was a great story and the script was great.  Another final note about the directing is that the editing for some key scenes like the drawing of the candidates when Katniss pushes the guard asking to volunteer was definitely done in various takes. which states that the director may have had creative influence over the actors drama. Putting the best shots together to create one of the best dramatic scenes of self-sacrifice and the power of love.

The Dark Knight Rises VS The Avengers

Which was the better film of 2012 now that the smoke has cleared? Is it The Dark Knight Rises or The Avengers?

My money goes to Christopher Nolan's Batman for ending his trilogy with class and dignity not only because the film was better but because Batman put up an amazing fight in the boxoffice overcoming a crazed shooter who woke up thinking he was Joker and he was going up against a collage of super heroes never before seen in a single film.
